Monseñor Oscar Romero Charter School Community,

Hi, this is Mr. Tiongco.  I will be updating this blog every week with information for all of you to learn MORE about our school.  One of the most recent changes that happened during the last couple of weeks has been the second semester schedule change.

On Mondays, we now have a minimum day schedule with a full 60-minute advisory period.  Having dismissal at 2:22 will allow our teachers from both campuses to learn and growth together.

Tuesday – Friday, we have extended the school day to incorporate a new Voyager Learning program to provide intervention/remediation support for our students who are performing below grade level.  For our students performing proficient or above, we now have elective courses such as Leadership and Communications.

Here is the schedule: 11-12 MORCS 2nd Semester Schedule

We have one more quarter of instruction before state testing and we want to do whatever we can to push our students to API 800!  If you have any questions about the new schedule, please call me at the school, (213) 413-9600.

Family Summit

Thank you to all of us who participated in this years Family Summit event!  It was a very successful day for MORCS staff and students.  It would not have been possible without the instrumental leadership of Mr. Cortez/Ms. Magaña/Ms. Sandoval/Ms. Bernardino/Ms. Beltran/Mr. Hernandez, etc. for organizing the event, Mr. Zepeda for getting our soccer team physically and mentally prepared to represent our school, and Mr. Mata for coaching/organizing our cheer team and bringing the energy to our school.
Also, a special thank you to our teachers/tutors for supervising and supporting our students/families throughout the day.  Our teachers/tutors led parent workshops, facilitated play rotations, served food, bought cheer shoes for students missing them, helped with registration, cleaned up areas, and cheered for our cheer/soccer teams all day.
Here are some of the highlights from the event:
  • The parents loved their workshops and talked very highly of the presenters and content discussed.
  • Heber Ramirez, father of 7th grade student Pablo Ramirez, received a Community Service Award for his over 600 hours of service to our school and community.
  • 8th grade students, Cynthia Torres, Edwin Stewart, and Armando Bertha, performed a fantastic hip-hop routine on the main stage.
  • Despite having the least amount of time to practice compared to all of the other cheer teams, our cheer squad did a phenomenal job representing for the school.  The dances were clean and the stunts were awesome.
  • Our soccer team defended its Jarritos Cup championship!  After a dominant performance in the semi-final against SFIAM, MORCS won the championship against VISA Charter in exciting, dramatic fashion.  After being down 2 – 1 with 8 minutes left, our team scored two straight goals to take a 3 – 2 lead.  Unfortunately, we gave up a goal in the closing minute to go to an overtime shootout.  In the shootout, Ana Reyes made the game winning goal and Pedro Chuc did a great job defending the net to close it out. The celebration afterward was a proud time for our entire school community.
If you see any of of the individuals listed above, please congratulate them and show them how much you appreciate their efforts with this event.

Thank you all for being MORE.
